I’m going blog-mad, suddenly I have tons of stuff to post! Here’s some actual art, a comic I’ve been working on in a sketchbook, in moments of spare time (click for a larger image):
Comics Album Covers
The cartoonist’s life is full of a lot of radio and music listening, and a lot of us are obsessive WFMU-listening music geeks in addition to being comics devotees. It’s pretty common to see comics art on album covers, from Charles Burns covering Iggy Pop to William Stout [correction: it’s David Gibbons–M] covering Jethro Tull. […]
99 Ejercicios de Estilo at Semana Negra
What’s that, you say? It means “99 Exercises in Style at Black Week” and it refers to the fact that Ediciones Sins Entido‘s Spanish edition of my book will be back from the printer any day now and I will be officially debuting it at the Semana Negra in Gijón, Asturias, in the northwest corner […]
Two Chester Brown Panels That Always Make Me Laugh
There are certain comics panels that sometimes appear in my memory out of the blue and make me laugh, and a lot of them are from the early work of Chester Brown. This one pops up most frequently (it’s the third panel from Chester Brown’s Ed the Happy Clown saga; Ed is on his way […]
This Once-Disparaging Term
Kudos to Ned Vizzini, writing in the New York Times Book Review, for being one of the first non-cartoonists I have seen publicly defending the word “comics” (well, he says “comic book,” which isn’t exactly the same, but it’s close enough): …it is easy to forget that “American Born Chinese” also functions well as a […]

Voyage to The End of the World (?)
Just got back from an overnight trip up to St. Lawrence University in Canton NY, near the Canadian border. I had to fly to Syracuse, then rent a car and drive for two hours to get there, so it’s pretty remote, although I feel the local Baptist church was overstating things a bit:
Recycle Your Comics
I got a new sticker for my recycling bin, one of those informational diagrams that tells you what kind of paper you can put in the blue recycling bin.
A few photos from NYCC and Rocketship
Here’s a photo post focusing mostly on young, fresh faces from last weekend’s New York Comic Con and the PictureBox party at Rocketship. First off, the School of Visual Arts table was busy throughout the weekend and had a much better location than last year, including an impressive display of original student art:
Moomin and Lost: the revelation
I was recently struck by similarities in the fourth story collected in Drawn & Quarterly’s Moomin: The Complete Tove Jansson Comic Strip and the first season of the TV show Lost, and I feel compelled to outline my discovery here. If you are not familiar with either of these works then I invite you to […]
