A few photos from NYCC and Rocketship

March 1, 2007 by matt 1 Comment

Here’s a photo post focusing mostly on young, fresh faces from last weekend’s New York Comic Con and the PictureBox party at Rocketship. First off, the School of Visual Arts table was busy throughout the weekend and had a much better location than last year, including an impressive display of original student art:

And speaking of SVA, recent grad Dash Shaw was up from Richmond VA to check out the scene. He showed me some pages from a massive 700+ page book he’s working on and they looked really interesting (and unlike most people who tell you they’re working on a 700 page book, he’s actually finished a large portion of it).

Jessica chatting with Austin English, who was literally wearing his hat as an employee of Giant Robot, whose stand he was working.

Contrary to the way he draws himself on his blog, :01 First Second editor-in-chief Mark Siegel does not normally wear overalls, as you can see for yourself:

Last Saturday night Rocketship in Brooklyn hosted a book release party for two great looking new books, Matthew Thurber’s 1-800-MICE and Frank Santoro and B.J.’s third issue of Cold Heat, both from PictureBox. Matthew’s band Soiled Mattress & the Springs played a set in Rocketship’s back room, which is slowly developing into a kind of gallery and performance space:

And here’s the Thurber in question:

Not young faces but certainly fresh: David Lasky was in town visiting from Seattle but because of the convention I didn’t have a chance to say much more than hello. That’s him on the left, chatting with my pal and designer Charlie Orr.

Gary Panter, right, at the end of the evening, catching up with up-and-coming cartoonist Eamon Espey, who studied with both of us at SVA:

I was glad I got a chance to talk with you and Jessica, even if only briefly. NY was a massive shot in the arm for me. I hope to be back again soon.
