99X: The Guest Exercises

When I first started this project in 1998, I sent an invitation out to a group of cartoonist friends asking them to create their own one-page comic based on a short text description of the 99X scenario. A bunch of artists sent in their work during that first year or so when they hadn’t even seen my own version yet. Over the following few years more of those original invitees graciously turned in pages and in addition I started receiving unsolicited comics from people who came across 99X at its original onlinle location at Indy Magazine. It is with pleasure and gratitude that I offer you this gallery of guest exercises in style.

I think that the way creators work within the constraints of genre can be extremely fascinating. Constraints are not only for the OuBaPian avant-garde, they also apply to those trying to write a six page story about a misplaced love letter or a duck trying to guard his dime.
